obscura v0.9.1 · questions, answered

what does it run on?

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. 4 GB RAM minimum (8 GB recommended), about 800 MB of free disk space.

is it really free?

Yes. No trial timer, no locked features, no watermark. Tips are welcome and help keep the project alive, but nothing is behind them.

does it need the internet?

No. Importing, editing, and exporting all happen on your machine — nothing is uploaded anywhere. The one exception: the first time you use auto-captions, Obscura downloads a 75 MB speech model. After that, captions work offline too.

windows warns me about the installer. why?

Obscura is independent software and isn't code-signed (certificates cost hundreds a year). On the SmartScreen prompt, click "more info" → "run anyway." The installer is served only from obscured.shop.

what formats can it import and export?

Imports MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI video, plus common audio (MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC) and images. Exports H.264 MP4 — YouTube 1080p/4K presets, vertical TikTok/Shorts, or custom settings.

do i need to install codecs or ffmpeg?

No — the encoding engine ships inside the app. Download, install, edit.

how do auto-captions work?

Right-click any clip with audio and choose "auto-captions." The speech is transcribed by an engine running entirely on your machine, and the captions arrive as ordinary text clips you can edit, restyle, or delete.
